Dynasty Warriors Origins will get ‘major DLC,’ and a new remaster is on the way

Following its dramatic Steam popularity, publisher Koei Tecmo confirms a big new Dynasty Warriors Origins DLC is in the works. The long-running series of legendary Romance of the Three Kingdoms action games finally found its footing on PC with its most recent entry, and now it’s set to get an expansion. In even better news for fans of battling Cao Cao and defiantly pursuing Lu Bu, the studio also teases that a new remaster for an older Dynasty Warriors game is on the way, as it celebrates its 25th anniversary.

Dynasty Warriors Origins landed to excellent reviews, and hit a Steam player count vastly above anything previously achieved by past entries, securing its reputation as one of the best action games in the series. Paul hailed it as “a major comeback for the king of crowd combat” in our Dynasty Warriors Origins review, praising its combat and narrative alike. It strikes that perfect balance between the glee of carving your way through cannon-fodder foot soldiers and fighting much more intense, challenging battles against major foes.

In a new video commemorating 25 years of Dynasty Warriors, Koei Tecmo reveals that it has a “major DLC in development” for Dynasty Warriors Origins. Despite passing the million sales mark with Origins, Omega Force head Tomohiko Sho believes the games are “not yet in a position to be called a success in the West,” and that there’s “still great potential for the series to gain many fans in the future.”

Perhaps this expansion will spur it to even greater heights, but there’s more on the way. The video then counts down through the entries from Dynasty Warriors 9, blurring into a question mark before announcing, “Remastered title scheduled.” There’s no hinting at which it will be, however. Personally, I’d love to see the Playstation 2 era of Dynasty Warriors 3, 4, and 5 represented, but who could say? Maybe KT will even go back to its original origins as a one-on-one fighting game.

“It wasn’t until I started planning Dynasty Warriors 4 that I became aware of the series continuing into the future,” Sho writes in an anniversary message, reflecting on its growth. “Honestly, I never imagined that we would reach the 25th anniversary. The fact that the Dynasty Warriors series has continued for 25 years is thanks to everyone involved and all the fans who have supported us. I sincerely thank you from the bottom of my heart.”

“Although we announced various things for the 25th anniversary, we are still considering many other ideas for the series,” Sho teases. Both the Origins DLC and new remaster appear on the company’s special Dynasty Warriors 25th anniversary page, although each is listed as “coming soon” with no further details for now. We’ll have to watch closely for more.
