Split Fictions’ stellar critic reviews joined by sky-high Steam user score

Hazelight Studios has long been regarded as one of the best developers around for two-player co-op games, but with the release of its new title Split Fiction, it might have just solidified itself as the best. After going down a storm with critics earlier in the week, it’s now racking up loads of positive user reviews on Steam, cementing its place as one of 2025’s best new releases.

Hazelight had already set a high bar for itself with its first two co-op games. A Way Out was full of excellent gameplay moments, but its real-world setting meant that some of its more surreal ideas and story beats felt a little off. It Takes Two, however, is a GOTY-winning triumph that sticks a middle finger up at realism and fully embraces creativity and lunacy, which is exactly what it needed to do. With It Takes Two boasting an ‘overwhelmingly positive’ 95% rating on Steam, Split Fiction would need to be truly special to beat it. On launch day, at least, that’s exactly what it’s gone and done.

At the time of writing, close to 500 user reviews have already been posted for Split Fiction on Steam, and 96% of them are positive. While its player count isn’t exactly Monster Hunter Wilds levels of amazing, it reached a concurrent peak today of 32,471 people. Of course, this is just on Steam, and because of its couch co-op nature it does lend itself to console gamers, so the overall picture is probably much rosier for Hazelight and EA.

It’s also worth considering that every copy of Split Fiction that’s purchased comes with a Friend’s Pass, which lets one of your pals play along with you for free.

With its 96% Steam rating, it’s currently one of the top rated new PC games on the platform for 2025 so far, but its critic review scores solidify this. Across the two biggest review aggregator sites, OpenCritic and Metacritic, Split Fiction is at the very top of the 2025 pile so far. On OpenCritic, it sits on a 90 average review score, tied with Monster Hunter Wilds and Kingdom Come Deliverance 2. On Metacritic, it is the undisputed leader, with its 91 average score trumping the new Monster Hunter (90) and KCD2 (88).
