I am an absolute sucker for space games. Whether it’s documenting the cosmos in No Man’s Sky, shooting up giant worm gods in Destiny 2, or dogfighting in Star Wars Squadrons, if there are some planets to explore or spaceships to be flown, I’m there. Imagine my intrigue, then, when I stumbled across Moon Mystery – a new space game that takes you on a single-player narrative adventure across multiple planets with a distinctly Starfield vibe about it. Now imagine my intrigue when I realized this indie title is launching with the one big feature that made Starfield so underwhelming for many when it launched. Yes, Moon Mystery has succeeded where Bethesda faltered and has launched with vehicles.
In Moon Mystery, you play as Sam, a lone astrobiologist roaming humanity’s first permanent lunar base. Well, I say ‘lone’ – you also have your AI assistant Tobi in your ear as you explore the derelict remains on the Moon’s surface. This is an FPS game at its core, so there are plenty of robotic and alien enemies to gun down with an arsenal of ten weapons and an array of over 100 attachments. In addition, as well as exploring through the facility to uncover secrets and progress the story, you’ll also be encountering plenty of challenging puzzles that you’ll need to solve.
However, after spending a good portion of the game on the Moon, your journey will take a twist that sends you off to various locations across the galaxy in true Starfield fashion. Alongside alien planets with different biomes and environments, you’ll also find yourself visiting “a vast city” on a giant Von Braun wheel space station, and even paying a visit to Earth too.
While of course Starfield will trump Moon Mystery with its depth of content, NPCs, and deep RPG systems, this humble indie does trump the triple-A titan with the fact that it actually gives you vehicles to explore in. Alongside a spaceship, there will also be lunar rovers, submarines, and even a tiny RC car for navigating tight interior spaces.
All in all, it looks like a pretty fun experience that has really focused on the space exploration fantasy as much as a game of this nature can. It’s also 10% off right now on Steam, making it just $17.99/ £15.07, but that offer will end on Monday, November 11.
